Everything pertaining to water has fascinated me since I was a little kid. Growing up next to a beautiful lake, I had the chance to spend a lot of my time there. SALT was for sure the one thing that I was looking forward to the most in the leadership training program. I was daydreaming about how amazing it would be to live on a boat; just the ocean and your crew for five days straight. I want you to close your eyes. Picture the rolling seas running past you and the spray of the ocean quenching your sun stricken face. Imagine witnessing the first initial glimpse of the sun over the Pacific Ocean as flying fish skip across the water. Our 2015 fall Surfers Leadership School Class experienced just this. For five days we embarked on a sailing adventure through the Hawaiian Islands on the “Makani Olu.” We charted the waters, navigated through channels, hoisted halyards, and guided the ship to each destination. After 8 years of dreaming- and months of preparing- the first ever S.A.L.T. trip was successfully pioneered by the students of the Spring 2015 Surfers Leadership School! So, what is S.A.L.T., you may ask? Surprisingly, the "S" has nothing to do with surfing, but rather - SAILING. S.A.L.T., an acronym for Sailing Adventure Leadership Training, turned out to be the perfect description for what the students experienced over their five days at sea.
