Bangla Bangla! Plus a giveaway!
Here we are again – the first international outreach trip of the year and it’s usually a doozy – Bangladesh! Somehow, this faraway nation of rickshaws, three-pieces, paratha and dhal has captured the imagination of generations of STNers.
We don’t usually do this but we are going to do a giveaway at the end of this blog, so keep reading!
Before that, though, let’s talk about the stoke around Bangladesh. While the rickshaws and paratha have played their part, there’s a LOT to be said for the sweet friendships and awesome adventure that Bangladesh offers, both of which were perfectly captured by the inspiring documentary, Gum For My Boat. This year is GFMB’s 10-year anniversary! Ten years ago, in 2008, talented videographer Russell Brownley, and his close friend surfer Kahana Kalama headed off to Bangladesh with the STN team to play their part in introducing surfing to the nation. Back then, some surfers had even been arrested for being in the water and knowledge of the sport (nevermind swimming itself) was scarce. A fear and distrust of the water pervaded and the only people who really spent any time in the ocean were fishermen. Now ten years later, surfing is a nationally recognized sport and many of our Bangla friends are even public figures. Our team is often met by the local media and we know that GFMB played a huge role in establishing the validity of surfing in the public mind.
