Staff of The Year 2015: Anthony Perez
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” -C.S. Lewis
This quote is a simple and perfect summarization of Anthony Perez. His character reflects just this. His love for others is pure, honest, and persistent. Why he was named staff of the year is not a surprise for us at Surfing The Nations. Any staff member would light up from the mention of his name and proudly boast of his humble character, work ethic, and selflessness. His time as director of our Feeding The Hungry program has been revolutionary.
When I was asked to write this blog post, my mind buzzed with ideas, pictures, and visions of things I could brag about Anthony. However, as soon as I sat down at my desk, the words came to an immediate halt and refused to allow my finger tips to dance across the keyboard. Due to my diagnosis of “writer’s block,” I searched for the cure and walked along the perimeters of our property in hope of some much needed inspiration. As I searched our little property in Wahiawa for material for this blog post, I spotted him completely invested in a conversation with a homeless woman. Even though Anthony had several things going on around him, he completely paused his schedule to tune in and love on this individual. There he was, attentive, invested, and focused on this woman and her story. What a perfect example of the quality of his character. What better inspiration could I possibly ask for?
Even though we wish we could keep him in Hawaii forever, greater things await on his horizon. This April, he will be leaving his legacy behind on this little island in the Pacific and transitioning to an island in the Indian Ocean. He will be working full time on Surfing The Nations’ base in Sri Lanka and investing in the people, language, and culture. Now that is what we call a ‘Surfer Giving Back’.
I can confidently speak from our entire ohana and say that we are incredibly proud of our dear brother and couldn’t think of anyone better to send overseas. Congratulations, Anthony Perez for being named Staff of the Year for 2015. Thank you for showing us what it truly looks like to impact local and international communities and to serve selflessly.
