Happy Birthday Cindy

Cindy Bauer is so much more than a boss, an executive director, co-founder or any other official title she owns at STN - she is an inspirational teacher, patient counsellor and motivational mother-figure to so many who have passed through here. In her “extended” 25 years of life, Cindy has been an example to hundreds, if not thousands, of young adults who strive to live a life of character, not comfort ;), and significance. Her aroma and wisdom echo in our memory banks long after we leave her presence! Cindy, thank you for always having your door open, heart wide and soft, ready to cry with us (or just all on your own!) and laugh with us. On ...

Freedom Surf Camp 2016!

Today's blog comes to you from our Surf Division Director, Lara Hamilton! Read more on why she loves sharing her stoke for the sport of surfing at our annual Freedom Surf Camp. I remember driving past Waimea Bay the first time I volunteered with Surfing The Nations, back in May 2014. I was reflecting on how the ocean and surfing had impacted my life, helped me to deal with my feelings and struggles, and how much confidence and freedom I received from being in the water. I remember dreaming of how cool it would be to have a Surf Camp for the youth of Oahu, especially the kids in our Ulu Pono program here in Wahiawa. Fast forward 6 ...

Road Tripping Through Australia

When years are spent dreaming about traveling to a new place, there is a strange mix of emotions that occurs when one finally arrives at said location. The excitement of being in a new place combined with the wonder of the unknown and a hand full of hopeful expectations is usually the trio responsible for the lovely endorphin rush a traveller experiences as he or she walks down the terminal. After leaving baggage claim and taking in that first breath of “fresh” air (usually a combination of car exhaust and jet fumes), he or she realizes it’s time to test whether the reality will live up to his or her imagination... Now, picture our ...

10 Days on Molokai

While everyone sees life from their own, unique perspective, it seems that photographers are gifted with an exceptional ability to catch details others cannot. Rachel Bushong, one of our talented interns, traveled with us on outreach to the island of Molokai and managed to capture some dreamy moments along the way in her journals and photos. Escape with us today and see a glimpse of the world through her lens...       10 days on Molokai and these are some snippets I remember: Making home wherever we went, quickly adapting to the nightly campfires and the sandy feet and salty hair tangled in sleeping bags. Waking up in ...

Summer Challenge: A Photo Blog

The first semester of Summer Challenge 2015 has come to a close, but the memories collected throughout this program will last a lifetime. Picking up a suitcase, boarding a plane, and experiencing Hawaii for a month might be an intimidating thing to imagine, but Summer Challengers are what some might call 'free spirited'. Hawaii is a place of exciting unknowns; there are few things more enchanting to us than wandering through the jungle, discovering new and untouched waterfalls. Every day is a new adventure, and every sunset is worth watching. We believe coffee was designed for drinking on the beach with friends, and that each wave that rolls in is ...

We present to you Ryley Snyder as 2014 Staff of the Year!     Taken back by this award, Ryley explains, “I’m definitely super humbled because of the caliber of people I work with, and thankful for the honor from everyone as well as ...
