REPORT BY BRIDGET BUTLER
This past Mother's Day weekend Surfing The Nations (STN)
along with Jedidiah co-sponsored the second annual
“Freedom Surf Contest” at Queens in Waikiki. The two day
comp featured lots more than surf, sun, and fun. From
great music by styled musicians, sick free giveaway
prizes, local booths from all over O'ahu who were there
to not only showcase their products and organization,
but to also support and promote the drug-free lifestyle
of surfing, the Freedom Surf Contest could be compared
to a small ho'olaulea, gathering, geared towards the
ocean minded.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines freedom as: “The
condition of being free from restraints” or “the state
of being exempt or released from some burden.” This is
the theme of the Freedom Surf Contest. To become
liberated, free, from substance abuse and alcohol which
so often can weigh down the purist parts of an
individual, or in this case, a surfer's soul. In today's
surf culture it is not hard to find that this healthy
lifestyle is commonly intertwined with heavy partying,
and drug use. The surfer high is promoted as a free and
crazy way to living big as one travels the world, and
surfs its surface. In actuality, drugs bring with it
more destruction and ruin, than prosperity and the
“high” that is sought after. With this in mind, I made
it my mission to get out on that sand and just talk to
people. I had a sweet time just meeting and talking to
some of the raddest and inspirational people, on the
beach that weekend that I would've never have walked up
and talked to.

Contest
Guests: Accessurf Hawaii
Surfing the Nations was pumped to team up with Access
Surf Hawaii in honoring a virtue that STN strives to
live by which is, “Surfer's Giving Back.” Partnering
with Access Surf gave disabled individuals the chance to
surf along with local Hawaiian legends. Access Surf's
special events man Tommy Chorman shared briefly why he
loves what he does. It wasn't too long ago when Access
Surf brought his autistic son who was five years old at
the time out surfing, and in Tommy's words it “changed
my life forever. Watching my little boy surf, I was
hooked.” Tommy looks forward to working with the Freedom
crew next year and thanks Tom and the rest of the crew
for being such a great team to work with. The honor goes
both ways.

Greetings
from the Mayor
Jay Ishibashi, special assistant to Mayor Mufi Hannemann
visited the contest and presented Surfing The Nations
with a message from the Mayor:
"I am very pleased to send my warmest aloha to everyone
gathered for the Second Annual Freedom Surf Contest:
Surfers for a Drug Free Hawaii. Surfing is a special
part of Hawaii's unique culture and history, and there
is no better place to see, learn and experience this
sports tradition than in its island home.
Our community deeply appreciates the commitment by the
Surfing The Nations Foundation to combat substance abuse
and promote a healthy lifestyle through surfing. This
surf contest offers a perfect opportunity to embrace the
sport and advance a positive image of surfers. Honolulu
is proud to partner with the meet organizers to support
such an enriching event that perpetuates our Polynesian
heritage. On behalf of the people of the City and County
of Honolulu, I extend best wishes to all the competitors
for a successful contest." -Mayor Mufi Hannemann |

Results
This year’s event had over 215 competitors ranging from
the Youth to Legends to Stand Up Paddle! Heats started
at 7:00am Saturday and Sunday. The competition was
intense but the good vibes were even better. Surf was
small, clean and ripable! Competitors had their work cut
out for them with slammed packed heats, great prizes on
the line and the sweltering sun beating down! Of course
all the heats were entertaining, however some specific
surfers shined.
Kawehi Whitford placed 1st in the Girl's Longboard
final. Mike Miller took 1st in the Mens Shortboard but
barely held off Jedidiah’s shredding team of Wyatt
Butterbaugh, Taylor Cook and Garrett Bonner. Michael
Sherman took 1st in the Legends Longboard and his
brother, Dave Sherman was close behind taking 5th. The
Enoka Family teamed up with a father-daughter combo that
worked well with father Kimo and daughter Kehaulani both
placing in their divisions! Jedidiah’s Kahana Kalama
took 3rd in Mens Longboarding. And I guess Buttons
Kaluhiokalani really is a Legend because he took 3rd in
Legends Shortboard and also placed 2nd in Legends
Longboard.
Layton Sun cleaned up shop with 1st in Senior Mens
Longboard, 1st in 225Ib plus Longboard and 3rd in the
Legends Longboard! Kaili Rodman placed both in Girls
Shortboard and Girls Longboardand. And showing all the
boys how to do it was Candice Appleby taking 1st in the
Open Stand Up Paddle Division! All that international
surfing and serving paid off with some of Surfing the
Nations own family placing and taking home trophies! STN
Staff, Charis Bauer took home 5th and Susan Halsell took
6th in the Womens Shortboard. Long time Surfing the
Nations Ohana member all the way from Big Island, Jeremy
Takata made an appearance in the 3rd place slot for the
Open Bodyboard. From Surfing the Nations X-Factory High
School Group, Matt Oshiro, Galen Mizunaka and brother
Garret Mizunaka regulated in the Boys Shortboard
Division. Great job contestants and congratulations!

Thanks
to Jedidiah!
for the
unreal t-shirts it pumped out in support of Surfing The
Nations' local and international outreaches. Thanks for
your creativity and for partnering with us to “Give
Back”.
Jedidiah's
%1 for humanity donates 1% of total sales to each
non-profit it supports. Surfing The Nations is one of
those ten. The two shirts, designed specifically for us
are a part of Jedidiah's Hope Collection through which
Jedidiah donates over 40% of sales to that particular
non-profit. In addition to this Jedidiah has really
jumped on board with us and is the title sponsor of this
year's Freedom Surf Contest “Surfers for a drug-free
Hawaii”.
Thanks Jedidiah for the reminder to be “Rooted In Love”
and that “sometimes love requires action”.

Overall, the Freedom Surf Contest, hosted by Surfing the
Nations was a complete success and fun for all ages!
Surfing the Nations was able to encompass their motto
this past weekend and were truly "Surfer's Giving Back."
Surfing the Nations is grateful for the opportunity to
host an event close to the heart of the islands and use
Hawaii's beloved sport of surfing to reach people of all
ages and educate them on the serious matters of drug and
alcohol abuse and prevention. We hope to be a part of
helping Hawaii become drug and alcohol free and pray
that this event changed hearts and lives forever. This
contest was the second annual Drug Free surf contest
that Surfing the Nations was privileged to host. Thank
you to all the competitors, sponsors, and volunteers for
making this surf contest a success! If you would like to
