Eric Arakawa Design
If you are into the surfing world – specifically the surfboard shaping world – “Eric Arakawa” is a name that probably rings a bell. An excellent surfer and world-renown shaper, Eric Arakawa shapes boards for all levels of surfers, all over the world. Growing up on the North Shore of Oahu, Eric started surfing at a young age, and very quickly became interested in shaping; at just 14 years old, he shaped his first board! Now, over 50 years later, Eric’s boards have been ridden to victory in countless Triple Crowns as well as WCT and WQS events worldwide, including Longboard and Big Wave World Tours.
However, Eric Arakawa is more than just an excellent surfer and shaper – he is a family man, a respectable leader in the North Shore community, on the Board of Directors for Christian Surfers International, and ultimately, an inspiring example of a “surfer giving back.” Surfing The Nations met Eric Arakawa and his family over 10 years ago, and we have continually been blessed by their heart of generosity towards us, donating numerous boards and blanks for our outreaches, international trips, surf contests and art shows.
For our recent 2015 Bangladesh trip, Eric and his son, Sean, an excellent shaper as well, donated 3 blanks, along with one of their brand-new ‘Bandit’ model boards, selected to best suit the surf club boys and the surf conditions in Bangladesh. Finished and glassed, these new boards would have been an epic prize for any surf contest, but for Bangladesh’s 1st National Surfing Tournament, these boards were more than just an award, they were a symbol hope and empowerment to each participant. STN is proud to be supported by the Arakawa family and excited by their commitment to using the sport of surfing to change lives.
Mahalo Eric, Sean and the whole Arakawa family!
