In Between Sets – Summer Recap

Before the (only slightly) cooler days of Fall come upon us here in the islands, we are catching our breath from a whirlwind Summer Semester. It’s had its fair share of highs, very few lows, and has altogether been marked with that special sense that something great is happening in people’s lives.   International Trips We sent around 70 people to Indonesia to celebrate STN’s 20th Annual Trip - can you believe it? Tom Bauer has been on all 20 trips and has literally seen babies grow up into adults. That’s a full generation of locals and ...

Looking Back to Sri ’16

Today we get behind the lens with David Vincent, former STN Intern and Service Teamer, and the talent behind STN’s newest Sri Lanka video. David was part of the outreach in 2016 and captured some of the soul of this vibrant nation in his video. We caught up with him, nearly one year later, to hear about his thoughts on his highs and lows of the trip. But first! The video! What were some of your first impressions of Sri Lanka? My first thought is: “Wow, it's hot here. Let's get to the ocean.” Oh man! It was rough. After almost a full day of flying, we got ...

Bangla Bangla! Plus a giveaway!

Here we are again - the first international outreach trip of the year and it's usually a doozy - Bangladesh! Somehow, this faraway nation of rickshaws, three-pieces, paratha and dhal has captured the imagination of generations of STNers. We don’t usually do this but we are going to do a giveaway at the end of this blog, so keep reading! Before that, though, let’s talk about the stoke around Bangladesh. While the rickshaws and paratha have played their part, there’s a LOT to be said for the sweet friendships and awesome adventure that Bangladesh offers, both of ...

Reminiscing On Indonesia

This year will be our 20th year going back to Indonesia. Here is a tiny snippet into the hearts of some of our team members that have gone previously.. Tom Bauer: Founder and President of Surfing The Nations and has been to Indonesia 19 times with STN! What inspired you to made a 20-year commitment to go back to Indonesia annually? My opinion has always been that if you could go to only one place in your lifetime, Indonesia should be that place! It is the second largest surf destination in the world. It has incredible culture, food, shopping, ...

Egypt Surf Contest 2016

After a four year absence, a reunion even with your best friend can be a little nervy, so as our plane touched down in the dusty nation of Egypt we wondered how our old surf friends would react to seeing us again. We spent a few days in Cairo with our team of 20 (21 if you count the baby!) seeing the sights, riding camels around the pyramids, reaching out to the impoverished of Garbage City, and marvelling at this modern city living side by side with echoes, whispers, and shouts of an ancient civilization.   The real fun started when we reached our ...

The Heart Behind Giving Back

“The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.”  CHEE! Christmas is officially around the corner and you all know what that means.  Joy.  Laughter flooding the atmosphere and warm snuggles.  Plentiful amounts of eggnog, the sweet smell of peppermint and colourful stockings hung above blazing fires. You know what the real magic is behind Christmas though? Giving. It’s watching someone's face light up when they receive the perfect gift.  That is the joy behind Christmas.  It’s not about a store bought gift or how many ...

Road Tripping Through Australia

When years are spent dreaming about traveling to a new place, there is a strange mix of emotions that occurs when one finally arrives at said location. The excitement of being in a new place combined with the wonder of the unknown and a hand full of hopeful expectations is usually the trio responsible for the lovely endorphin rush a traveller experiences as he or she walks down the terminal. After leaving baggage claim and taking in that first breath of “fresh” air (usually a combination of car exhaust and jet fumes), he or she realizes it’s time to test whether ...

Sweden Ohana Night

This December, Stefan and Christy Eriksson, directors of STN Sweden, hosted an amazing Ohana Night Fika in Flora, Sweden! The evening was full of laughter, memories, dreams and plans for the future. We were thrilled to see the growth of STN Sweden and loved reconnecting with STN Hawaii alumni, new and old. From starting families to offering assistance to refugees in Sweden, we could not be more proud of all vast ways that our Swedish Ohana are impacting their communities in Sweden. Thank you to all who were able to be a part of this special evening! ...
